A recent update to Fortnite got minds racing about the lifespan of each new game mode, as Rocket Racing will officially not be getting more big-themed updates. This has left players wondering is Rocket Racing dead or does the game mode still have some life left in it?

Fortnite launched three major new game modes in Chapter 5. These was Fortnite Festival (the Guitar Hero clone), Lego Fortnite, an open-world survival title, and Rocket Racing. The final game took some cues from Rocket League and comes from the same team. However, it also incorporates more of how cars work in Fortnite and generally has its own feel. It’s also proved to be by far the least popular. So, is Rocket Racing dead and what’s happening with this new update?

Rocket Racing Losing Themed Updates

Looking at is Rocket Racing dying, a lot of fans have been assuming the worst after a recent update from Epic.

Around the time of 2024’s Fortnitemares, we got an announcement on the future of Rocket Racing.

Rocket Racing’s last Inferno Island themed update (they’ve not referred to these as seasons for some reason) has come to an end. However, there’s nothing coming to replace it. Instead, a new Ranked period is beginning without a major update. We’re just going to cycle through the existing content.

The announcement included a section on new tracks, mainly highlighting those made by the community A lot of players have taken this to mean there are no new Rocket Racing tracks coming officially. Although, it’s not clear if designed tracks are stopping entirely or just moving away from the themed updates. We are still getting these new cosmetic rewards!

While themed updates are gone, new quests and rewards were added for this ranked period. Although, it’s hard to argue that support for Rocket Racing isn’t slowing down.

Is Rocket Racing Dead?

Rocket Racing isn’t dead! It does have lower player numbers than most of the other modes, but it’s a much less mass-appeal type of game mode than something like Lego. The game still has its dedicated fanbase, and matchmaking is very quick.

With Fortnite’s player count being so high for most games, it’s easy to draw a poor comparison for Rocket Racing. Compared to most games in its genre though, it’s still getting decent player numbers. It would be unfair to call the game dead, it does feel in need of a bit of attention though. It’s currently got some bugs that are becoming quite a problem, including a particularly fun one where your car pops a 360 on its own accord when in the air. Fun if you’re playing Pro Skater, not so great when you’re just a few percentage points away from hitting Unreal.

Racing is still receiving updates, but it doesn’t seem like it’s getting a massive push of new tracks anytime soon. Most of the major ones are already being addressed, as we can see on Epic’s public bug Trello for Fortnite. Including issues like collision. We’ve also seen Rocket Racing specific content in Fortnite leaks so far too, not so much recently.

Rocket Racing hasn’t been the breakout hit of Lego Fortnite, but it’s definitely not being removed entirely. There’s still new content coming in some form, even if it’s not what fans have been getting for the last year.
