In an action-packed trailer, Arrowhead Game Studios revealed the full slate of features coming to Helldivers 2 in the free Escalation of Freedom update, which launches on August 6. One of the biggest changes is the addition of a new CR 10 difficulty level: Super Helldive. The studio describes this as “our most challenging, most relentless dive difficulty level yet,” which is sure to excite those who felt they had perfected their strategies on the previous difficulty levels.

Mission variation is also a huge focus in the Escalation of Freedom update. New objectives and bigger bases for both bots and bugs will be introduced, which will be tougher to complete than anything in Helldivers 2 previously. Crucially, the new mission objectives can be found on any difficulty – not just Super Helldive.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Helldivers 2 update without some new enemies. Both the Terminids and Automatons are receiving new enemies to kill, offering a fresh challenge to those bored of the current offerings. For the bugs, the first up is the Impaler. Returning from the original Helldivers, the Impaler puts a stop to any run-and-gun strategy. Then, there’s the Spore Charger – it’s the Charger, but bigger. Finally, there’s the Terminid Alpha Commander, which again is a more deadly version of the Brood Commander.

On the Automaton side, there is only one confirmed new enemy type: the Rocket Tank. We don’t know exactly what that entails, but it doesn’t sound pleasant. However, Arrowhead Game Studios did also tease “some other bot surprises we’ll be throwing your way,” so look out for those on August 6.

The final major change comes as a fix for grief-kicking. Now, when a player is kicked from a lobby, they’re placed into a new match with all their previous loot. This way, they still don’t lose out, even if kicked from the game.
