You are Basim, a young assassin who attempts to overthrow a dictatorial regime in Ubisoft’s version of Baghdad. Mirage brings back the fun by including predecessor features such as eavesdropping and pickpocketing that were greatly missing in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Origins, and Valhalla. Yes, the controls are a little stiff, but Mirage is an interesting game.

Elden Ring is filled to the brim with tricky elements. One of the strengths of FromSoftware’s fantasy epic is that it is rather flexible, as you have total freedom to choose weapons and style of combat. The outcome of this is that if you wish to, you can play Elden Ring as an action experience; charging into battle with two blades aloft, dodge-rolling through engagements, and using weapon arts to perfection in order to keep combos going. It is not a secret that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has a huge fan base. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 throws you into the suits of Peter Parker and Miles Morales, two guys who were bitten by radioactive spiders, but with an interesting twist compared to the original result. Peter’s powers have the standard super strength, speed, and enhanced senses that everyone is used to, but Miles gets the more experienced version of these powers, along with some stealth and electricity to boot.

After the 2013 reboot, Rise of the Tomb Raider appeared to be the new series of Lara Croft’s life. Even though 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider had some absolutely awesome puzzle-and-platforming tombs, Rise brings together the typical Croftian stealing of ancient artefacts with some really killer survival and action elements, making it our pick for the best Tomb Raider game.
6. Star Wars Outlaws

Star Wars Outlaws was certainly one of the most overlooked games in 2024 but we found it fun. This time, you are a blaster-wielding scoundrel in a galaxy far, far away but with many improvements compared to the previous games. In Star Wars Outlaws, you will find a gigantic, beautiful open world for you to explore, new planetary environments and even dogfighting and space travel.
The sound design really stands out as the best part of Outlaws’ story and the game as a whole. Those who worked on the music and all the sound effects for blasters, speeders, ships, and the environment deserve a lot of credit. Outlaws’ sound design is true Star Wars, and it beats even Respawn’s Jedi games. The combat feels a lot more exciting, and Kay holds her own in a shootout. Kay’s blaster is super flexible and lets her switch between four types of shots quickly: stun blast, standard fire, electrified shots, and a powerful blast, so she’s ready for anything.
5. Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the story of the Old West’s violent death. You play Arthur Morgan, a member of an outlaw gang, who also loses his faith in the criminal world. However, Arthur cannot think of anything other than stealing and killing (at least at the start). This makes you go out on numerous daring missions. Red Dead Redemption 2 does impress on PC with a few hiccups in performance. Its fantastic plot, beautiful graphics, and a wide range of optional quests and always-changing online mode can keep you busy for years.
4. Horizon Forbidden West

What makes Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West so fun is that you can do exciting things in a gigantic world. No matter how much there is to see, fighting remains the main focus of these games. Regardless of what Aloy chooses to do, it all boils down to battling those monster machines with tons of weapons, gadgets, and the environment. The rest of the cast are great at keeping you from feeling alone. Varl, who’s an old friend of Aloy’s from the Nora tribe, is with you from the very beginning. He stands out by giving you a comforting presence and making Aloy more open. It’s a nice switch since Zero Dawn’s adventure was usually pretty lonely.
3. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Most action games give you a chance to play as every character in the cast, but Guardians of the Galaxy is all about one main character. You take charge as Star-Lord, guiding your team and giving support in a battle against evil.
That said, the story itself is pretty straightforward, but Eidos Montreal’s Deus Ex background is clear in how much you can change Peter’s responses. Whether it’s a big story beat or just small talk with your crew, you’re always given choices for Peter’s answer, and it’s nice because the Guardians’ writing and performances are so entertaining. These conversation choices are a nice way to play around with Peter’s personality, and sometimes they make a bigger difference than you’d think.
2. Control

At some point in time, gaming fans wanted a type of The X-Files game with action and adventure, which is exactly what Control does. Jesse Faden is lured to the Federal Bureau of Control (kind of like if Mulder and Scully found a secret part of the government all on their own), and after grabbing a mysterious gun, she becomes the director of the whole operation. While all this is happening, an evil force called The Hiss is attacking the building from another world. By the end, you’ve got a fresh and satisfying shooter, since not only are you blasting away at bad guys, but you can chuck fire extinguishers too. Truly one of the best action games with a unique approach.
1. Black Myth: Wukong

For those who don’t know, Black Myth: Wukong was the crowned winner of the best action game title at The Game Awards 2024. The story is based on Journey to the West and it follows the character based on Sun Wukong, the Destined One, in the present story.
It was created in Unreal Engine 5, and the environments and landscapes are very detailed and beautiful, and the boss fight design can compete with FromSoftware’s games. Don’t worry too much about the difficulty as Black Myth: Wukong comes with complex systems and combat design that will only make you better and better as you move along.
