T1 vs DK – fighting for third place

With three weeks of play left to the end of the LCK summer regular split, the teams are slowly starting to spread across the standings. Gen.G have already qualified for the playoffs and, as a result of winning MSI, have locked in their spot at Worlds 2024. This means that there are three more spots up for grabs, and with multiple teams looking on form, the pressure is on.

After experiencing some losses in the mid part of the split, T1 have come out from last week with 2 wins, pushing them to fourth place in the standings. DK, on the other hand, failed to tie the score with HLE and are now third in the standings with one win over T1.

This direct battle might become crucial to determine the standings at the end of the split: a DK win puts them in a strong position to close third in the standings, while a T1 win will increase the team’s chances to finish higher, especially considering T1 would have the head-to-head score to their advantage. With that in mind, let’s break down the series.

Match breakdown

DK comes from a heartbreaking loss against HLE after an incredible finish to their series and a 45-minute Game 3. Despite the team’s best attempt at coming back from a gold disadvantage, DK couldn’t stop Viper and his Zeri in the decisive teamfight.

Regardless of the result, though, DK has looked strong and confident, often using their own strength and pocket picks instead of heavily relying on the meta. They are one of the few teams that do not play AP junglers and use Kai’Sa with AP mid or top to compensate for the lack of magic damage. In a sense, their drafting is more traditional but also take the players’ strengths into account.

T1, on the other hand, have fallen back to their comfort playstyle in the last week, using the double ranged bot lanes with a mage mid, tank jungle, and top lane setup. While it’s not the most meta-adherent playstyle, it’s something T1 is comfortable with and have little issues in playing whenever they have their backs against the wall.

Among the two, however, I’m currently more inclined to give DK the better meta read. Unless T1 is able to get advantages early on, Showmaker and their squad will have stronger chances at closing out the games later on. It will be a close series, though, so expect a 2-1 score for either team.
