WBG vs LNG – LPL Summer Playoffs Preview

After a strong summer split, both WBG and LNG are hoping to repeat their feat from the previous year of qualifying for Worlds 2024. That being said, with 6 teams still in strong contention, and only four slots available, the stakes are getting increasingly higher. Especially considering the recent state of the LPL where BLG and TES have looked much stronger than the rest. With that in mind, let’s quickly look at who is favored to take the series and keep their playoff hope alive.

Series Breakdown

WBG have made considerable upgrades over the mid-season break, bringing in Tarzan and Breathe. With their performance, the team was able to fight some of the top teams. That being said, I feel like this team has one big double-edged sword and that is their jungle Tarzan. Whenever the team is able to put him into a comfortable position, he can single-handedly make the team look much stronger. But if he’s heavily countered, then the whole WBG starts to fall apart. Xiaohu hasn’t been able to have the same level of impact on marksmen champions and that can be troublesome in a Bo5.

LNG, on the other hand, looks often lost in the mid-late game macro and their teamfighting. Against TES, they were even able to get some small leads but they eventually dropped it as the games went on. In that particular series, I also believe there was some poor draft adaptation where the enemy was able to basically run the same team comp twice. Maybe they seemed like it wasn’t an issue but it ultimately cost them a shattering loss.

Among the two, I would say that LNG’s potential might be a bit higher. I think both teams have small advantages in specific roles but ultimately LNG looks a bit more convincing to me due to their ability to play more according to the meta.
