In a surprising series of events, MDK and FNC found themselves fighting for a spot at Worlds 2024: who is favored going into the series? Let’s analyze the two teams and their chances of victory.
FNC vs MDK – LEC Season Finals Preview
The LEC Season Finals brought major surprises in the first round after MDK, which underperformed for the majority of the summer split, defeated G2 in a close 5-game series. With the team still in the upper bracket, there are strong chances for the team to qualify for Worlds 2024.
If the Spanish team were to win against FNC, they would automatically lock in a spot for Worlds. And even if they lose, MDK would still make it if BDS is unable to beat G2 in the lower bracket. Overall, the odds are quite high.
Nonetheless, MDK will have to prove their worth against FNC as they want to aim for a higher seeding at Worlds. With that in mind, let’s quickly break down the key elements of the series.
Series Breakdown
MDK’s surprising win against G2 mainly came from the team’s top laner Myrwn. The top laner ended up pulling out spicy champion picks every game, including the likes of Zeri, Smolder, and Nidalee. It looks like the bootcamp has worked well for the team as they now have an ace up their sleeves.
Going up against FNC, the focus for me will be mostly on the top and jungle matchup. We know that Razork and Elyoya are both formidable players, with the former arguably being the best jungler in the LEC. These two will likely dictate the early game for both teams. Myrwn might have a strong impact if he gets his hands on similar picks so it will be up to Oscarinin to find a way to counter it.
On the other hand, FNC seemed to have a good meta read in the series against Team BDS and we also saw them going for riskier picks in Game 3. The team looked confident and performed well but the question mark for me continues to be Noah: the Korean ADC has some off moments and you can’t really tell until it happens during a match. If he’s not in good shape, then FNC might struggle a lot more than they should.
Despite MDK’s spicy drafts, I think FNC is more consistent and overall looking stronger. Unless multiple stars align, I don’t see them losing to Ibai’s team.
