Happy birthday to Clash of Clans, because the freemium strategy game has turned 12 years old today. The game was released back on Aug. 2, 2012, and in this article, we take a look at the history of one of the most popular mobile games worldwide.
The title has a rich history, not just as a standalone game, but also about how its popularity gave birth to the Clash universe.
Supercell made the game in six months
Back in 2012, iPhone 5 was released, and the Windows Phone was still a thing. With very low device specifications, Supercell set out to redefine mobile gaming, starting with Clash of Clans. The game was developed in just six months and was an instant hit in the U.S.
Such was the game’s popularity that SoftBank bought a majority stake in Supercell in 2013. The ownership has since shifted to Tencent, though. Both owners have allowed the cash-chunking developers of Supercell to remain independent, continuing to deliver their popular games in 2024 as well.
A look at the longevity of Clash of Clans in its 12th anniversary
However, the main thing that makes Clash of Clans such a revolutionary title for mobile gaming is its longevity. Many popular titles have been released on Android and iOS in the past decade, but none have managed to hold on to their playerbases like Supercell’s strategy game has.
There are many reasons for this. The first is the continued updates to the game, giving players something new to grind for. Secondly, is the progression system in the game, which takes a lot of time to upgrade buildings, structures, and train troops. Thus, a player develops an attachment to his base, as it’s something they have put a lot of hours into.
Furthermore, Supercell developed Clash of Clans esports in 2019, giving birth to yearly esports tournaments for the game with huge prize pools. Coupled with the popularity of other Supercell games like Clash Royale and Brawl Stars, Clash of Clans continues to top the charts globally to this day.
To celebrate its 12th anniversary, Supercell has brought an anime theme to Clash of Clans.
