DK vs Gen.G – the top two teams clash off once again

After being eliminated in the first round of the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, Gen.G quickly proved to everyone that the tournament was just an incident. As soon as they went back to Korea, the team picked up where they left: dominating every series and scoring an incredible record with the longest game win streak in a single season.

Gen.G has looked unstoppable domestically and after winning MSI earlier this season, every thing points them as a strong contender for Worlds 2024 later this year, especially considering they are on their way to locking their Worlds slot, as they all need to qualify for playoffs (they will get a guaranteed 2nd seed or higher).

With the second round robin starting this week, will DK be able to get closer to Gen.G compared to last time? Let’s find out in our preview.

Match Breakdown

In their last match one week ago, Gen.G obliterated DK with two 30-minute games. What was evident was that Gen.G seems to be at ease in this meta, more so than their counterparts. Gen.G is just incredible in the teamfighting and even if they fall behind as they did in Game 2 of the last series, they can easily come back with one well-executed fight.

The key of this matchup will be the mid lane once again: there are too many champions Chovy is strong at and Showmaker doesn’t seem as comfortable playing those same champions. The latter mostly plays Taliyah and not Tristana-Corki which are the power picks of the mid lane tier list, banning them more often than not. This puts DK’s draft at a disadvantage in the first rotation, which inevitably affects the whole draft select.

If there is one chance for DK to win against Gen.G is if they are able to pull out something magical from Lucid’s champion pool and if Aiming is able to get his beloved Zeri in a state to carry the game. That said, the odds of all stars aligning are low, which is why Gen.G is favored to take this series once again, and potentially push to a new record.
