G2 vs MDK – LEC Season Finals Preview
G2 and MDK meet again in the lower bracket of the LEC Season Finals. Following their first match which saw MDK send G2 in the losers’ bracket, this match will lock in the #3 at Worlds 2024.
A lot has happened in the past two weeks as many of the initial expectations have been completely turned upside down. Many thought MDK didn’t deserve to be in the Season Finals given their performance in the last two splits, but they managed to upset G2 who was considered the strongest team in the league.
G2 showed even more volatility in the series against Team BDS: the questionable first two games were opposite to the last three which allowed them to make the reverse sweep happen. With this in mind, let’s check out what are the key factors of this explosive match.
Series Breakdown
MDK was able to bring FNC to game 5 but there was often some weird decision-making that led them to the loss. FNC was also often better at finding opportunities to catch the enemy off guard with flank teleports and fight initiations.
That said, MDK’s main strength continues to be their ability to be proactive early on and snowball the game thanks to Myrwn and Elyoya. By levering his champion pool up in the top lane, MDK is often able to gain control of the top side of the map and use that to gain more objectives in the mid game.
This will be the key G2 has to break if they want to defeat MDK. Yike and BrokenBlade will have to somehow find a way to neutralize that, either through draft or smart pathing. Otherwise, try to force Supa off his comfort picks (Ezreal, Zeri) and look to punish him through the bot lane.
The mid lane matchup will also be important: put Caps into a position to pressure Fresskowy and not the other way around. It will be tough to do considering MDK’s mid lane plays marksmen champions well so G2 has to figure something out to break that.
Overall, it wouldn’t be surprising if we were to get Silver Scrapes a second time. If I were to predict a winner, though, I would still give it to G2: whenever the pressure is on, the guys always deliver. And there isn’t a better situation than this.
