Usernames in Fortnite can take on a life of their own. Your Fortnite username is the main way other players recognize you in-game, alongside your skin it’s how you represent yourself to the entire lobby. Since Fortnite has been around for a little while now though, you might not be happy with that name. If you chose something that doesn’t really work for you anymore, it can be helpful to change your Fortnite username.
Epic doesn’t lock players to a single username. Instead, you’re actually able to change it pretty frequently. Although, that’s only on a few platforms. Just like PC players get a better performance (with the best Fortnite settings), they also have the easiest method for how to change your username on Fortnite! You can still change your name on every platform though. This is how you can do that.

How to Change Fortnite Username on PC
PC is probably the easiest platform to change username! This is how you can do it here.
- Go to your account page on the official Epic website
- Find display name under “General”
- Type in your new Fortnite username
- Click “save changes”.
That’s all you need to do to change Fortnite username here. You can do this every two weeks, so it’s easy to try out tons of names.
Players do need to make sure they’re using a username that isn’t in use. Players are limited by availability, and some filters. Epic blocks out words that they don’t want to show up. So as long as your new username isn’t against the rules or taken, you should be able to change it. Obviously, you can’t take the existing names of players, like Fortnite pros either.
Change Your Username on PlayStation
PlayStation is not as easy as PC. For most of the consoles, how to change Fortnite Username isn’t necessarily harder, but there are some big drawbacks. This platform uses your wider PlayStation Username as your Fortnite display name. If you want to change it, you need to change your entire PS online ID. This is a frustrating limitation. However, it isn’t really on Epic’s part. It’s just down to how PlayStation runs its accounts.
You can do this once, for free. Then after that, it’s going to cost you. If you want to change it the first time though, this is how to change Fortnite username on this platform.
- Go to the official PlayStation Network
- Head to account management, then profile
- Click edit next to your ID
- Enter your new ID and save changes.
Change Username on Xbox
Xbox is a bit like PlayStation for how to change Fortnite username, it’s not a good system. Just like PlayStation, you have to pay if you want to change it more than once. Once again it’s down to Microsoft’s rules for Xbox, not Fortnite. If you do want your first free Fortnite on Xbox name change though, this is how you can do it.
- Go to the profile and system after pressing the Xbox button
- Select your profile, then customize profile
- Select your gamertag and replace it with a new one
- Click change gamertag to confirm the new choice.
Keep in mind that you only get one free change. But you can do make a second profile or account with a new name, it just means abandoning your progress so far on that account.
Change Your Fortnite Username on Switch and Mobile
Switch and mobile devices are the final systems. How to change your username on Fortnite is simple here. These might be lesser powered, but with Fortnite cross platform play you can still play with friends here and will need your Fortnite username up to scratch too! This is actually the easiest platform along with PC.
These platforms get their name changed by using the official Epic site, just like PC. Just log in with a browser. Once you’re done, the name will change on this platform just like PC.
Nintendo doesn’t limit how you change your name, so there’s no restrictions here to just once like other consoles.
Can You Choose Any New Username?

The toher big thing to keep in mind for how to change your Fortnite username is availability. You’ll need to find a Fortnite username that hasn’t already been used. Since we’ve got more and more Fortnite accounts as the seasons have gone by, there’s fewer and fewer available ones.
Increasingly, players will have to get more creative to find a username that isn’t taken. Then there’s the filters Epic uses. They block out the common things, like some public figures, slurs, and other words they wouldn’t want to appear.
If you’ve looking for a funny Fortnite name there’s probably still plenty of potential, you’ll have to pick a clean one to be able to pick it up though.
