The last Fortnite update was a bit of a weird one. Not quite a big content drop with collabs and other huge additions. But Fall Guys came to the game, as did one feature we’ve been waiting on for quite a while. Proximity Chat in Fortnite is here! The chat feature is common in some online games with a focus on interaction. However, in Fortnite, it has been a long time coming.
Proximity Chat is a feature which pretty popular for some types of games, like GTA Online and other role-play-focused online fare. The feature is arriving for select creator-made islands in Fortnite. Although, it isn’t turned on by default. This is how it works and where you can experience it.
What is Proximity Chat?
Voice chat in online games isn’t anything new, but proximity Chat is a particularly focused version of voice chat that can enhance the experience. It’s voice chat, but it only works in close proximity to other players.
Fortntie Proximity chat will work on some game modes. As you’re close to a player, you’ll be able to hear their voice chat. Rather than just hearing your party, it’s entirely location-based.
For some modes that encourage a more realistic form of dialogue, this could work well. Players will be able to hear people around them kind of like actually hearing people.
Proximity Chat isn’t for every game. Quite a few won’t see much benefit and probably won’t have it turned on. However, a good handful will have proximity chat enabled. Battle Royale doesn’t though, so you don’t need to worry about getting flamed in firefights.
How to Use Proximity Chat in Fortnite?
Proximity chat in Fortnite is a new feature, but it’s also entirely optional. It’s a feature that will only work when players are on an island with it enabled. Even if you want to use it on the best prop hunt maps, it won’t work unless the map maker has it turned on.
So if you want to try out proximity chat in Fortnite, you’ll need to head to a map that is already making use of it. It’s off by default, but we’ve already seen quite a few maps making use of it.
Once you find an island that has it, all you need to do is go into the game with your voice chat turned on. Proximity Voice chat will replace the normal voice chat in this mode.
Another thing to keep in mind with the new feature is that it’s early access. It won’t be available for everyone starting out. We’ll have to see how this early access goes and if Fortnite rolls it out more widely to maps in the future.
