As it often does in the scene, the rumor mill is swirling about a big new CS2 update being just around the corner. Throughout 2024, Valve has traditionally done one big CS2 update per month, but missed this quota in July. This means we’re overdue.

Popular Valve dataminer aquaismissing has confirmed a new backup of CS2 has been uploaded to Steam, which is only done when a big update is around the corner, so that tournaments can revert to the previous build if anything seriously breaks.

Like with every new CS2 update, Valve is being typically Valve about it. We know something is in the works, but don’t have any details about it. We’re going to speculate about what the next big CS2 update will entail, and discuss when it might release.

New CS2 Operation

This might be pure copium, but there’s a chance that a new CS2 Operation could be in the works. It could even be the next update to the game. It’s been known for a while that comic-book-style assets can be found in CS2’s game files, presumably for future use as they’re not currently in the game. Throwing fuel in the fire, dataminer aquaismissing recently retweeted an old tweet of theirs, with three simple words: Operation Vampire Bat.

As we move deeper into the second half of 2024, it could be the perfect time to release a spooky-themed Operation. If this is the case, we would expect it to come sooner, rather than later, to give players the time to experience everything the Operation has to offer. Again though, this is speculation.

Overwatch

Back in April, Valve added Dust 2 back in the map pool in a huge CS2 update. As part of that patch, Valve confirmed that the community-regulated anti-cheat system from CS:GO, Overwatch, had been added back into the game. Queue many surprised players finding out they’re unable to actually access Overwatch, and four months later, still, no one has access to the system.

Clearly, Overwatch files were added to the game, but Valve needs to make them accessible with another update. After all, CS2 has a big cheating problem plaguing the game at the moment. We think that any big CS2 update could finally see the return of Overwatch. We certainly hope so, at least.

When will the new CS2 update be released?

To us, these are the two things that make sense to us right now in terms of content. But for the timing? Well, IEM Cologne 2024 is set to begin, but Valve has shown at Katowice earlier this year that it doesn’t care about making game-changing patches mid-tournament. We don’t expect this to be a consideration for the studio. Given that SteamDB is seeing backend updates to CS2, we’d go as far as to say the new CS2 update is likely just days away, or less. Let’s hope it’s a big one.
