Super Smash Bros is one of the most popular fighting game series, with a new Nintendo console announced, it’s tempting to wonder when will Smash Bros come to Switch 2? The console is still in its early days. We don’t know much about its games beyond the first two. However, we do know that Smash will be playable on the platform, and that GameCube controllers are still going to be a part of the system.
We’re currently in the longest stretch of time between Smash Bros releases. Given the size and scale of Ultimate though, players likely aren’t climbing the walls for another release. Smash esports have been pretty well balanced with Ultimate and Melee. Instead, it looks like we might be getting an improved version of Smash Bros on Switch 2, at least for the first few years. This is what we know about how the platform’s biggest fighter will work:

Smash Bros on Switch 2 – Ultimate
When the Switch 2 releases, it’s getting a new major version of some of big franchises like Mario Kart. Although, Smash Bros doesn’t seem to be in the initial line up. While it has been a long time since we last got a Smash Bros game, there are some other reasons it might take longer. Like the development team being currently busy with a completely different game!
Smash Bros on Switch 2 will be available at launch though in the form of Ultimate. Nintendo is rolling out upgrades to existing Switch games so they’ll run better on the new Switch. For Ultimate, this could mean a performance upgrade. Since ultimate is already the definitive Smash experience available, this will likely keep players happy.
The director of the Smash series is currently directing a new instalment for Kirby Air Ride. Developed by the same team behind Smash 4 and Ultimate. Since this game has likely been their current project, we can probably say a Smash from the same team isn’t in the works right now, or at least isn’t very far along. Sakurai has indicated resistance to returning to Smash in the past. Although, he’s also acknowledged the series is too big for Nintendo to leave alone. He’s similarly claimed to be done after the last few Smash titles, so it’s possible they do get the team back still. But a new title seems to be further away than other series.
So, while Ultimate is still very popular, a new instalment in the series is likely still further away. There is some good news or Smash Bros on Switch 2 though. Players will be able to use their favorite input methods for the platform.
GameCube Adapter Will Work with Switch 2

One bit of news that will be particularly exciting to Smash Bros players and maybe confusing or those who don’t follow the game is the GameCube Adapter. It’s a little periphery to use GameCube controllers with modern hardware. Made for the WiiU, and continued on the Switch. Despite its lack of promotion from Nintendo, they do seem keen on keeping support around for Smash players.
The upcoming Switch Online GameCube controller won’t be useable with new games like Ultimate. However, the GameCube adapter will mean Smash devotees can still continue to use their same controllers if they make the switch to play Ultimate on the newer hardware.
