Today, we’ve learned of MultiVersus shutting down. The title launched initially to record player numbers, but it’s been downhill ever since. After a first shutdown led to a long period offline, the game came back, switching to a new version of Unreal. However, it didn’t prove much more successful. After struggling for a while, we’ve learned now that MultiVersus is shutting down, this time for good.
The game had a lot of ups and downs. From an exciting launch, it’s essentially died twice. This second time isn’t really a surprise to many. It’s been clear for a while that MultiVersus is dying, again. Its comeback never really caught fire, with a lot of fans already burned from the first time around. The shutdown notice has come with a new season, which is going to prove to be the final one of MultiVersus’ lifespan.
MultiVersus Shutting Down After this Season
Along with the announcement of Season 5, we’ve learned that this is the end of the road for MultiVersus. It’s the end of the game’s active life. Not only is it losing its updates, so no new fighters, balancing patches, or content. But it’s also going offline permanently. The game can be downloaded to play. But MultiVersus offline content has already left a bit to be desired. So, fans won’t exactly get the full experience.
The game will be shutting down on May 30th. For days leading up to the announcement, rumours had circulated that Season 5 was something of a last chance for the game. If it didn’t perform, that would be it. Since most fans probably weren’t expecting much of a comeback from this new update, there’s been some time to get used to the idea. It’s difficult to argue that MultiVersus hasn’t been a failure. Although, it’s surprising to see its servers being shut down much quicker than similar failures like Suicide Squad.
Will Players Get Rounds?
Live service games are weird. They are free, but a lot of players spend money. When a game is as aggressively monetized as MultiVersus, players expect to be able to use their purchases. When one shuts down players often want a refund. However, they aren’t coming for this game.
Even though bundles of the game were sold with fighter tokens which are yet to be honored, this will be it. They aren’t getting MultiVersus characters for all the sold fighters. Players will have their currency left over at the end and the paid content isn’t being made free for the offline version in any way.
