Consistency is key in PUBG Mobile esports. The one team that has mastered it is the Brazilian squad of Alpha7 Esports. They are by far the most consistent teams in terms of their performance at international events. However, one thing that has evaded them is the first-place finish – and this has happened so many times that people now call it a curse. However, this time, at the PUBG Mobile World Cup (PMWC) 2024, Alpha7 were able to break their curse.
A look back at Alpha7 Esports’ curse in international tournaments
Brazil has a lot of PUBG Mobile esports talent, and the only team that has consistently performed has been Alpha7 Esports.
The beginning of their curse can be traced back to 2021. Coming into the PUBG Mobile Global Championship (PMGC) 2021 – West, they were one of the favorites to win it all. The team had just come back after a victory in the Pro League (PMPL) Americas Championship.
However, despite a great showing in a few matches, the team managed a fourth-place finish. Since then, in every international tournament that Alpha7 played in, they placed in the top 5, but not in first place.
World Invitational (PMWI) 2022 Afterparty Showdown: Second place
PMGC 2022: Third place
PMWI 2023 All-Stars: Fifth place
PMWI 2023: Fourth place
PMGC 2023: Third place
PMGO 2024: Second place
Both editions of the PMGC were especially heartbreaking. At the end of the first day, Alpha7 were placed first or in second place. However, a few bad positions denied them a chance at a well-deserved trophy.
The PMGO Heartbreak
The biggest heartbreak, however, came earlier in 2024 – which really brought down the cursed team allegations. The first-ever Global Open (PMGO) 2024 took place in Brazil and as the home team, Alpha7 were heavily favored to win it all.
And they almost did just that, at least until the end of the first day. Alpha7 secured three chicken dinners out of the six matches on Day 1. For everyone, this was it. The curse was being broken as the team had built up a comfortable and there was no way they were going to lose it this time. But, that is exactly what happened.
After a devastating Day 2 and a last-ditch attempt on the final day, the team could only manage a second-place finish. But the team was able to rise from the ashes at the Esports World Cup 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Alpha7 broke their curse at the PMWC 2024
The PMWC 2024 would have given fans a few flashbacks to the PMGO. The team was leading after day 1 and were continuing their dominance in the lobby. However, with their consistency, the team was able to pick up the prestigious trophy.
Now, it remains to be seen if they keep this up at the PMGC 2024.
