Pokémon Legends Z-A Introduces Battle Zones and a Unique Combat System
Unveiled as part of the Nintendo Direct on March 27, alongside exclusive reveals like the Virtual Card System and Metroid Prime 4, Pokémon Legends Z-A is a brand new entry into the Pokémon franchise, with a unique twist.
Traditionally, the Pokémon Legends sub-franchise has explored a time between Pokémon game generations. For example, Pokémon Legends: Arceus had a time-travelling twist that sent the player back to the island of Hokkaido of the past, in the midst of the franchise’s 8th gen.
However, Pokémon Legends: Arceus received criticism at the time for not being as graphically impressive as other Switch titles. For one, the game avoided flashy graphics for a more clear, stylized visuals. Unfortunately, when compared to titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it’s hard to defend Arceus.
Pokémon Legends Z-A will seemingly also take place during an established generation, this time the Pokémon X and Pokémon Y games, released in 2013, albeit in a different time setting. Players will take part in the Z-A Royale, competing against other trainers in Battle Zones to raise your rank from Z to A.
“The story is set in Lumiose City, where an urban redevelopment plan is underway to shape the city into a place that belongs to both people and Pokémon. Compared to Lumiose City as it appeared in the Pokémon X and Pokémon Y games, released in 2013, more greenery now adorns the city, alongside facilities with a cutting-edge feel.”
The game will feature a hybrid battle system that will have you dodging real-time attacks, but also using turn-based strategy as well. We think this may be similar to some of the classic Final Fantasy battle systems of the past, or other hybrid turn-based/action JRPGs.
The game is releasing in late 2025, so there’s not too long to wait, but we’ll update you when we find out more information,
