StarCraft 2024 Year in Review
Esports World Cup
Looking at any game’s 2024 year in review, there’s one new event that is a major stand out. The Esports World Cup. While not a new idea, this fresh tournament has taken the idea of an overarching World Cup for esports to a new level. With huge tournaments for tons of games. StarCraft 2, as one of the oldest and most well-established esports, was well-represented at the event.
The tournament took place in August, with a huge prize pool over a million dollars. While it was ultimately Clem who won, the event featured most of the best players. Serral came in 2nd, with Dark and HerO just behind.
In the Final Four, Serral blew through Dark, along with Clem against HerO, both finishing 4-0. In the Grand Finals, things were just as clean, with Clem resoundingly winning 5-0. This wasn’t the only major win for the year for Clem, but he didn’t fare so well in all the biggest events.
IEM Katowice StarCraft 2024
Another major event for StarCraft 2 2024 was IEM Katowice 2024. One of the biggest on the calendar every year. Uniquely, this year IEM Katowice even partially served a qualifier for the Esports World Cup. Adding another higher layer of competition to the year. Results were pretty different this year.
Rather than dominating, Clem came in 5th-8th. A very promising result, but not quite the fire he unleashed at the Esports World Cup. In the play-off bracket, Serral entered in the quarterfinals and easily went through Clem. In the Semis there was a closer match against Dark, 3-1.
Also starting in the Semis was Maru, who went up against byuN. In a close match, he only just secured his place in the semifinals, 3-1. Up against Cure things got a bit smoother though, locking in his place at the grand final.
In the last match of IEM Katowice 2024, things weren’t exactly close. Serall beat Maru 4-0 Stopping the game pretty short of anything too close. StarCraft 2024 has been a bit of a year of definitive wins, with the best StarCraft players sitting head and shoulders above the competition.
