Virtus.pro has upset Team Spirit in the group stage of the Clavision: Snow Ruyi tournament, defeating their inter-regional rival in a shocking display. VP were able to take down Spirit 2-1 after a 61-minute game on July 29.

The back-and-forth series saw Virtus.pro take the opening game with their high-risk, high-reward picks of Sven and Windranger securing victory. But the two-time TI champs Team Spirit struck back in game two, bullying their opponents with their superior map control.

In the final game, a struggling Team Spirit attempted to capitalize on comfort picks, but ultimately found themselves unable to defeat a surprisingly revitalized Virtus.pro. VP defeated Spirit 2-1, after an almost four hour series, that saw the game run into the late hours of the night in Zhangjiakou, China.

VP’s lineup is currently augmented with a pair of stand-ins at support, with One Move’s Vladislav “Rein” Kosygin and Hydra’s Dmitry “doctorboom” Tazhibaev. And this pair of supports have not missed a beat while filling in, allowing VP to secure this upset win.

After being 2-0’d by Na’Vi earlier in the day, it was expected Virtus.pro would rack up another unfortunate loss. But the team turned around and shocked the opposition.

Team Spirit themselves have had a not so stellar performance in the Group Stage of Snow Ruyi so far. The team has one win and one loss and a 3-3 record after a single day, with two games to play tomorrow.

With the group stage wrapping up, Team Spirit will need to turn things around, as their Eastern European comrades in Natus Vincere and Virtus.pro look poised to upset them in the Snow Ruyi tournament thus far.

Clavision: Snow Ruyi wraps up its group stage on July 30. After a days break on July 31, the tournament will run until August 4. The Champion will take home the lion’s share of the $500,000 prize pool.
