WBG Xiaohu – Worlds 2024 Semifinal Interview

Q: Weibo Gaming had strong team compositions but faced challenges in teamfight coordination and decision making. Can you share what was missing in the execution and where the team could have improved in connecting plays?

I think the biggest issue was the mid game macro rotations and contesting vision and the places we decided to take fights in. In the first game, the rift was probably better in the mid lane and in the second game the baron fight the enemy double carries didn’t have flash but we focused on Jax instead.

Q: How did you feel about when WBG picked Maokai for the top lane and Elise for the jungle in game 2? Today happens to be Elise’s birthday as well.

To be honest, the top lane choice was affected by scrims and we thought that Maokai and Poppy were good into Jax but he ended up having two good games, we weren’t good with our teamfight decision making. For Elise, we should have played aggressively but because of the level 1 fight we started playing more toward scaling.

Q: What was the feeling like after the loss and what are the plans going forward?

After losing, we were quite sad and we felt like we didn’t do that good on most of the stuff. But a loss is a loss and there isn’t much you can do. Now, I just hope we can get some rest.

Q: It’s unfortunate you weren’t able to go through, how would you describe WBG in this Worlds and the year in general?

If we look at our journey, I still think it’s a good year because we only played together as 5 from summer and we struggled initially, almost dropping in the lower group but we then made it to the LPL finals and a top 4 at Worlds. I think we all improved throughout the journey and being the #4 seed is probably a good result but it’s still a bit of a pity because we couldn’t get to the very end .

Q: We have seen Skarner and Jax being very strong in the whole world. What was the strat to face it and why leave it open in the three games?

It has partially to do with how the scrims have been, Jax and Skarner are decent picks into Yone but we also picked champions with lots of crowd control for teamfights and junglers like Brand and Elise that don’t have many issues against Skarner. We were able to get a few advantages early on but our mid-late game decision making wasn’t as great, which is why we lost.
