Marathon is a new team-based extraction shooter that Bungie, the creators behind the Halo and Destiny franchises, are developing. If Marathon becomes as popular a shooter as expected, it’s only logical that players would demand cross-play support. If you’re planning to pick up Marathon when it hits the virtual shelves, we’ll keep you updated on its cross-play options.

Fans looking to pick up this game will rejoice in the fact that Marathon will offer cross-play options. Meaning that if you have a PC, and your friend has a PlayStation 5, don’t worry! You’re going to be able to play together without any issues. But the good news does not stop there because, when Marathon releases, it will also be cross-save, meaning if you want to switch between your console and your PC, you will have the option to!

Cross-save is great fan service, and something Bungie has worked effortlessly to achieve with their Destiny 2 game, allowing players to seamlessly switch over between the consoles and the PC. There haven’t been any further details on how the cross-save will integrate fully, but we’re sure Bungie has a strong idea they’re going to implement.

The Good News for Xbox Players

With Bungie technically having ties with PlayStation, you may be wondering if Xbox users will need a PS network account in order to play the game. Xbox players can rest easy knowing they will not need a PS account in order to play Marathon. This has been a problem in the past with other PlayStation titles, but not Marathon, thankfully. Bungie hasn’t released any explicit details on how the cross-play or cross-save will work, other than the fact that it will be present in the game. Stay tuned to for future updates on that front.

What Cross-Platform Means for PvP, PvE

In many modern games, especially competitive ones, it’s common to see that there is the option to have cross-platform. Games like Call of Duty, for example, went full in on trying to integrate the PlayStation and Xbox players, instead of the community being divided between two consoles.

Not every player enjoys it, so you can likely expect Marathon players to have the option to toggle it between standard and cross-play. Although there are several PvE aspects like in Helldivers 2, where you’ll be working with your team to collect gear and other materials, there is a PvP aspect, which could see one platform have the advantage over the other. For years, mouse and keyboard and controller players have been going at each other, trying to claim a higher skill level over the other. This is another opportunity for those players to test that skill with cross-play.
