If you’re playing Dota 2 in 2024, you’ve probably realized that despite the reputation for toxicity, Valve isn’t a fan of having those toxic players in their game. To combat this, they brought in behavior and communication scores.
What is the communication score in Dota 2?
Valve introduced the communication score relatively late in 2023, compared to Behavior score, which has been a feature for a few years.
There’s a distinct difference between these two scores. Your communication score is based on the quality of your in-game chat and speech interactions. The behavior score is based on the negative actions you do in-game, such as griefing or intentional feeding.
The consequences for a low score are different too. For instance, you’ll lose the ability to get post-game item drops, pausing and ranked matchmaking if you have a poor behavior score. Having a low communication score will lead to losing your ability to ping, tip and ultimately text and voice chat.
In severe cases of toxicity, you’ll even get text and voice mute and all communications will be on a 30-second cooldown.
How to increase Communication Score in Dota 2
Considering the severe consequences of having a low communication score in Dota 2, here’s how to improve it.
1. Say nothing
They say silence is golden. Nobody will ever complain if you keep quiet and just play the game properly because they might just assume you’re mic-less.
You could even take this one step further by only making necessary communications, such as saying “gl hf” or “good luck have fun” at the start of the game and only ping as callouts.
Of course, at the end of the match, say your “ggwp” or “good game well played” well wishes. This helps lighten the post-match mood where you could potentially exchange commends with your teammates.
2. Mute everyone
If your communication score is less than 6000, you have a much more severe issue than merely not being able to communicate well. If you want to know how to increase communication score in Dota 2 quickly, a more drastic measure would be to mute everyone, both allies and enemies. By doing so, you isolate yourself from potentially being provoked or trigger an all-out toxic conversation.
After all, unlike competitive Dota 2 Esports, you can treat pubs or even a ranked matches like bot games. But remember to use the common pings and item/skill cooldown callouts to inform your team about your current situation.
According to many players on Dota 2 Reddit, staying muted isn’t as effective as being able to communicate positively. Hence, you can consider applying the first method of improving Communication Score too to boost your progress in improving your Communication Score further.
In hindsight, it’s really easy to improve your communication score. Just have a PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) and with enough consistency, you might just up to the 10,000 top communication score.
