Despite entering the finale of the LEC Season Finals as the first qualifiers, Fnatic’s more than 2,000-day wait for a title continues. The side put up a valiant effort on the day, starting the series 1-1 with two impressive performances before succumbing to the inevitability that is G2 via a 3-1 loss. Humanoid was aiming to become only the second-ever mid laner to beat G2’s Caps in an LEC final and, despite the defeat, put in a respectable display.
Esports.net: Despite losing the final today, Fnatic played well in a number of matches and looked like there was a chance you’d take the title.
What do you think was the actual difference today that meant that you couldn’t quite clinch it?
Humanoid: I think they just played better from mid-game, late-game. We don’t really know. We were just playing it bad. We were just looking for fights all the time and they just didn’t fight. So, yeah, then we were always on the back foot everywhere. They were first on every objective and, yeah, it was hard.
Lee Jones: Fnatic looked in a commanding position for most of game one.
Why do you think that one ended up in G2’s favor?
Humanoid: In that game there were many times where we had position on an objective and we just run away and based and they just walked in. If we just stay there in the zone, they can’t really walk in and we win the fight. But we just recalled, gave them all the control and then we had to facecheck again and it was a hard fight after that.
Why do you think there was that hesitation to go for the objectives? Perhaps playing a bit too carefully since it was only the first game in an important final?
Humanoid: I don’t think it has anything to do with that. They just know what to do better than us. That’s pretty much it. We don’t really know how to finish games without fighting, like, how to have a good position on objective. Because we always just win by fighting and, yeah, it’s not a good thing if you play against a team that doesn’t just run into you.
Is that what led to winning game two then? Do you think G2 were more willing to go for those fights that you wanted?
Humanoid: I think we just managed to outplay them in teamfights in that game. And once we get ahead, it’s not hard to finish against their comp because they don’t really have any comeback potential. So it’s really easy to finish, even if you don’t play perfectly in that game. We were also out-scaling them pretty hard.
Lee Jones: Today’s result means that you’ve still not beaten Caps in a final, though your lane matchup against him today was good; going even at the very least.
Are you confident that you’ve shown enough that you can beat him in a final on a different occasion?
Humanoid: I think for sure there’s only me and him that are above everyone. I think a lot of the other players just don’t really know much about, like, later on about competitive. I would say it’s more of their good mechanics and stuff like that. So I think we are just too above everyone else.
Lee Jones: Three third-place finishes are impressive given how hard it is to knock G2 off of the top spot.
I understand it’s probably a bit early to be getting too retrospective, but are you generally satisfied with the LEC results this season?
Humanoid: For me personally, no. I feel like second place is the same as last place. So, yeah, if you’re not first, it doesn’t matter where you end. I guess it matters if you want to go to Worlds, so that’s the only reason that it’s better to be second. But if there was no Worlds, second is the same as last.
What’s the plan now for Worlds then? Any sort of break of just full steam ahead?
Humanoid: We will take a few days’ break, I think, and we just go back in. I think the meta world will be completely different than it is now, so we need to get ready for that and figure out what we want to play.
Lee Jones: LoL Worlds could be beneficial for the sake of comfort and routine, but lacks the travel and grand arena.
What are your general thoughts about having Worlds in Europe, and specifically in the studio?
Humanoid: I would always prefer to be in another continent than Europe, for sure, especially since most of it is in Berlin where I’m just all year anyway. So it’s like there’s nothing new about it. And I usually enjoy the travel part of Worlds a lot. But it’s probably fine, we just need to make it to Paris at least.
