LNG vs WBG – is LNG the best Chinese team at Worlds?

If the first time is a coincidence, then the second time it’s fate. The LPL continues to show how competitive their pool of teams is, qualifying all of its teams to the top 8 at Worlds. While it wasn’t an easy run for the majority of the team, seeing all Chinese squads going through is a great indication of how consistently good these teams have been, despite not winning titles since MSI 2023.

And with an LPL vs LPL battle in one of the quarterfinals, the Chinese region is guaranteed to get at least one team in the semifinals. Will it be LNG or will WBG make the magic happen like last year? Let’s break down the series.

Match Breakdown

LNG went undefeated on the Worlds Swiss stage to many people’s surprise, especially considering they were probably the ones with the biggest question marks coming into the tournament. The Scout incident and all the potential consequences lowered the expectations for LNG, who, however, was still a team expected to go through, just as we predicted on our pick’ems.

In the end, the team ended up dominating, becoming the first team to qualify for a top-eight finish. One of the main reasons was their quick and correct meta read as well as a great synergy with the player’s comfort picks. GALA and Scout love the champions that are currently meta such as Yone, Kai’Sa, and Jhin, but it’s not only about the two carries.

Top laner Zika is known for its Jax, K’Sante, and Renekton, who just happen to be the best three champions in the top lane. Hang is great on engage supports like Rell and Leona while Weiwei is the flexible player who can adjust based on the team composition. Overall, this team is scary and it can potentially be the best LPL team out there to win it all.

On the other hand, we have Weibo Gaming, who’s run was a lot more rocky compared to LNG. They fought their way by sticking to comfort picks and great adaptation during the Bo3 series, but the overall meta read doesn’t seem as good as their counterpart.

Breathe is the only one who matches the meta picks well but the rest is mainly looking to play what works best for them. In a Bo5 series, it can be a big disadvantage from a drafting perspective. Nevertheless, WBG has shown potential and the ability to have exploits, so it might not be as one-sided as people might think. Expect the series to finish with a 3-1 or 3-0 score in favor of LNG.
