Day one of play in the Thunderpick WC 2024 has come to an end, with s1mple’s CS2 return not quite going to plan so far. The first set of matches were played between the four Group A teams, 3DMAX, OG, Virtus.pro, and Falcons. Let’s take a look at how it went.
s1mple CS2 return ends in early elimination
After two matches, Falcons have already been eliminated from the Thunderpick World Championship 2024. All eyes were on the team as s1mple, arguably the best CS:GO player of all time, was making his debut with the new roster. Despite facing 3DMAX in the opener and Virtus.pro in the subsequent loser’s bracket, Falcons couldn’t even muster a single map win, in yet another embarrassing performance for the team.
Incredibly, after over a year out of the server (one series against Metizport in March aside), s1mple was far from the problem for Falcons. Dare I say he even looked… good? The opening map against 3DMAX was rough, but from that point onward, he was solid, putting in 27-16, 18-15, and 23-17 maps for Falcons. While Falcons are obviously a dead roster walking, s1mple’s debut in the Thunderpick WC 2024 offered positive signs for those who want to see the GOAT back at the peak of his powers in CS2.
3DMAX progress to the next round
While 3DMAX aren’t quite in the Thunderpick WC 2024 Playoffs yet, they’re now just one match away after taking down Falcons and OG without dropping a single map. It’s a testament to how the day went that the win over OG was the more surprising result. 3DMAX continue to show a good level of CS consistently, and you’ve got to have them in that bracket of CS2 teams that can cause an upset on any given day.
3DMAX looked to Graviti and Maka for much of their fragging output here, but no one player really lacked before for the Frenchmen. OG had a great day from Astralis alum Buzz, who will feel unfortunate not to have progressed here.
Now, 3DMAX await their opponent for the Thunderpick WC 2024 Playoffs Play-In, which will take place on October 26th. Meanwhile, OG face a rematch with Virtus.pro if they’re to make the next stage of the Thunderpick World Championship 2024.
