It’s time for Rocket League to take to the stage at the Esports World Cup. The final week is underway and just before it kicked off, we got the chance to speak to Alexis “zen” Bernier all about Team Vitality, overcoming disappointment and celebrating wins.
Sophie: So I just wanted to start by asking about the Esports World Cup.
How is your preparation been for that?
zen: It’s okay. We are scrimming so much. We have a good preparation, we are together and I mean you have a good practice or let’s fight it.
Are you boot camping right now?
zen: Well, we have been boot camping together for five days. For we are together consistent.
Does that improve how you perform, do you think?
zen: I think it’s an advantage for all people because for us we are close friends. It’s a lot and we like to be together so it’s really funny.
Sophie: Yeah, that’s great.
So when you go to Riyadh, what are you most looking forward to about that tournament?
zen: For Riyadh, we will try like a real tournament. It’s a real tournament but for us, we want to win because we don’t win so much at the moment. So it will be really good to win.
Sophie: Talking about not winning so much this year. I just wanted to touch very quickly on RLCS London, the Major from a couple of months ago. It wasn’t your best performance. It was a little disappointing.
How do you overcome disappointment and keep going?
zen: I think we have a lot of problems like Radosin was sick and it wasn’t helping a lot. So I mean if even he was not sick, we may win it or maybe the finals. So we don’t know. We can’t change the past.
Sophie: That’s it. Absolutely.
How has your performance changed between London and now Riyadh?
zen: We’re just looking forward. We scrimming, practicing, we talk together. We worked so much and I don’t know to say more but we are taking like a vacation. Now we are focusing on Riyadh and work.
What do you like to do when you’re on vacation? How do you relax?
zen: I really like go with my family and my friends and that’s it.
Sophie: Okay, so not with the teammates?
zen: Yeah.
Sophie: And yeah, you mentioned going to Worlds next month. You guys are going to be the defending Champions.
Are you already prepping for that or are you just focused on Riyadh right now?
zen: Now we are focused on Riyadh and after we look at Worlds, we go step by step.
Sophie: Absolutely. Which tournament are you more hyped for defending that title at Worlds or going to the Esports World Cup?
zen: It’s like what I say we focus on Riyadh and afterwards Worlds.
Sophie: Okay, cool more excited for that right now. And So just one last question for you after you do get these big wins at Worlds last year.
How do you celebrate? What do you like to do with the team?
zen: That’s a secret.
Sophie: I think we understand, you just play more Rocket League, right?
zen: Of course, yeah, play more Rocket League.
