If you’re competing in Fortnite tournaments or trying to build a locker of great skins, security is kind of important. There’s lots that can happen to a Fortnite account that isn’t being taken care of. Thankfully, Epic has systems like Fortnite MFA which can help to keep your account safe.

If you want to compete in tournaments, having a secure account is a necessity. You aren’t allowed to take part in Fortnite esports tournaments until you’ve even set things up. In the past this was 2-factor authentication, but Epic has changed things. They’re moving to Fortnite MFA or Multi-factor authentication. What is this new system and how can you set it up in-game?

What is Fortnite MFA?

Fortnite Multi-Factor Authentication is a security protocol to stop other people logging into your account. It’s not as complicated as it sounds! An account with a password is single factor authentication. That means there’s one way to authenticate your log-in, by entering your password and proving that it’s you.

Multi factor authentication is where you use more than one method to authenticate your login. You probably already use this on loads of accounts. Many online platforms are moving to multi-factor now, though often called two-factor. It’s a system where you have to use your password, and use a different method. Typically getting a code sent to your phone or email.

Fortnite MFA is to use more than one method of authentication. It stops other people getting access. Great if you’ve got some rare Fortnite skins to keep an eye on.

What’s the Difference with MFA and 2-Factor?

In the past, Fortnite 2FA was a major part of account security. It’s now changed to Multi-Factor! What does this actually mean for a player though? Well, not that much.

Multi just means more than one, which includes to. If you’ve already got Fortnite two factor authentication set up then you’re likely already passing the MFA requirements. You can add extra authentication methods if you want though. MFA is just a wider term, a bit more future proofed than 2FA for if you want to add a third at some point in the future.

In practise, Fortnite MFA and 2 factor are the same things. If you’ve already got two-factor turned on then you don’t need to worry about it. If you haven’t though, it’s easy to set up.
