For about the 230498230498th time since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate came out, we’re getting word once more that Super Smash Bros. 6 is coming. This time, we could be getting it as soon as 2027.
Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai claimed he was retiring after the final DLC in Ultimate, but that man never truly rests. Whether it’s because the Smash community won’t let him or because he can’t picture a Smash game without him involved, Sakurai can’t seem to stay away from the fighting game series.
It’s never been a mystery that Smash 6 was going to happen. We just didn’t know when. Sakurai has given a lot of hints that it’s coming, including claiming that he would start developing the next Smash after finishing up with Kirby Air Riders. He notoriously only works on one game at a time.
Well, Kirby Air Riders is done.
Super Smash Bros. 6…. Or Switch 2 Edition of Ultimate?
According to Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly, an industry insider who interviews game devs, Nintendo has some big plans over the next few years. This includes high-profile projects. Like Smash. In a tweet, Kiwi Talkz said Smash is coming “in the next year or two.”
He added: “People are misquoting me again. Nowhere in the tweet did I say any of these games are NEW. Maybe they are, maybe they aren’t, but I was vague for good reason to protect devs. It could be new, it could be a spinoff, it could be a remaster, it could be something on NSO. Don’t jump the gun and get ahead of yourselves.”
Okay, so he didn’t say it’s a new Super Smash Bros. But we all know. Sakurai himself has already confirmed. But 2027? That’d be crazy.
Of course, it could be a lame “Switch 2 Edition” of Ultimate before Smash 6. Boy, would that be cringe.
