Fighting game tournament organizer Port Priority is adding Super Smash Bros. Melee to its lineup for the first time. The event will be called Port Priority: DX.
Port Priority: DX will take place on November 14th-15th in Seattle, Washington, the same city where Port Priority is held every year. Melee will join Smash 64 and Rivals II as the featured tournaments. There will also be vendors and side events, like Melee, Rivals, and 64 Doubles.
On Start.gg, Port Priority wrote: “Featuring an all-star cast of international talent, a plethora of vendors and side events, the return of Rivals of Aether II and Super Smash Bros. 64, and an all-day revival ladder to fight your way back into bracket, this debut event is sure to be one for the ages. Will YOU be there?”
Melee Getting More Popular
Super Smash Bros. Melee has been getting a lot more attention as of late. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s a mainstream esport or anything, but the FGC has realized it’s one of the more entertaining titles to watch. As an older game, there are rivalries spanning over a decade, intense storylines, and passionate players.
A lot of streamers have gotten into Melee as well. Ludwig Ahgren is often promoting Melee through his own tournaments or flying pros to majors. Melee God Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma has been supporting locals, funding tourneys, and starting fundraisers for players in need.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is often the headliner of all the Smash titles, but it’s been growing stale. Japan is dominating, Steve is annoying, and there aren’t really any storylines as impactful as over in Melee. When Smash 6 comes out, that will hype up the new gen crowd a bit. But even then, Melee will prevail, never giving up or slowing down.
Port Priority DX has a 768-player cap, with the Melee tournament only allowing 512 players.
